Because it is a low-maintenance grower, Hackberry has an extensive native range and is beloved by many in the animal kingdom. It is a host plant for the Mourning Cloak, and 37 other butterfly and moth caterpillars (nwf.org). Birds also enjoy the fruit of the plant, including many songbirds and game birds (Bird Table) (Audubon.org).
